How to choose your tinned fish
New to tinned fish? Start with what you already like. If you enjoy fresh, meaty fish, try tinned mackerel or tuna. For something small and savoury, tinned sardines are the classic place to begin. If you want something richer, look at tinned salmon and trout or our seafood range, which includes mussels, clams, octopus and scallops.
Olive oil, tomato, brine or spiced?
The medium the fish or seafood is packed in changes the whole tin:
- Olive oil: rich and mellow, and the oil is delicious on bread.
- Tomato and sauces: tangy and ready to spoon over toast, rice or pasta.
- Smoked and spiced: punchy and good with a squeeze of lemon.
- Brine: clean and light, with the flavour of the fish up front.
Tinned fish from Portugal, Spain and the UK
Portugal and Spain have centuries of canning tradition, and you'll find them well represented here in our Portuguese and Spanish ranges. We also stock a growing selection of British tinned fish from producers like Hevva! and Rockfish. Not sure where to start? Our bundles and gift packs take the guesswork out, and our recipes have plenty of ideas for how to serve the tins.
Tinned fish FAQs
What is the best tinned fish for beginners?
Sardines in olive oil or tomato sauce are a reliable first tin, and mackerel in olive oil is another approachable choice. Both are mild and work well on toast.
Is tinned fish healthy?
Tinned fish is a convenient source of protein, and oily fish like sardines are known for their omega-3 fats. It is usually preserved with salt, so enjoy it as part of a varied diet.
How long does tinned fish last?
Unopened tins keep for a long time in a cool, dry cupboard. Check the best-before date on each tin. Once opened, move the contents to a covered container, keep it in the fridge and eat it within a day or two.
How do you eat tinned fish?
Straight from the tin with good bread, on toast, in pasta or salads, or as part of a seafood board with pickles, olives and lemon.
Do you offer free delivery?
